After graduating high school and spending a year at community college, John Thomas decided to leave home to build on his amateur wrestling background and compete in professional wrestling against the advice of his mom and step-father. Little did he know their reasoning behind it. Despite not knowing a lot of moves, John Thomas did gain a good reputation as being a very durable competitor, able to withstand a considerable amount of damage while still staying in matches, getting up time and time again even when some thought he was going to be down for the count.

After a few months of roughing it in cheap motels and doing dishes at diners along the road, a mysterious benefactor started investing in John's future - paying for nicer hotel rooms, transportation from city to city, and a masked personal trainer to teach John how to better compete in the ring. When John Thomas decided he no longer needed Gryffin Anselm as his trainer and opted to train with Loco Martinez instead, Gryffin Anselm unmasked himself and revealed himself to be William Anselm, but he wasn't done with the surprises. He also shared the secret that John Thomas' benefactor was actually John Thomas' biological father, Rob Belote. There was tension between the two for the first few months after the revelation, but eventually they were able to work together in harmony, though no father-son bond ever really formed despite Rob's attempts.

During his time on the road, John Thomas befriended young women in most of the towns he visited, but in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, he met Diane. She joined him on the road for almost a year, but then returned to work for her uncle's busy diner back in Calgary. After several months of correspondance, John Thomas visited her on a long stretch between shows, only to find out the hard way that Diane was now dating another guy... finding them in a compromising position.

This lead John Thomas to have a bit more angst, giving him a harder edge inside the ring, especially liking to target his opponent's shoulder.

At some point, no one is quite sure when, John Thomas started "dating" LEGACY road agent Anastasia Ewing, though many feel that John Thomas probably doesn't consider it to be a monogamous relationship. In various attempts by several individuals, Anastasia Ewing has refused to talk about the relationship at all.
