Born September 9th, 1981, D.J. Cassidy grew up in a family steeped in
wrestling tradition. D.J.'s grandfather, "Scrap Iron" Jack Cassidy
was a wrestler in the Saint Louis, Amarillo, and Kansas City territories
in the 60's, 70's, & 80's while his dad, "Jumping" Jimmy
Cassidy, worked as a mid-card talent in various NWA affiliated territories
from the early 70's to the late 80's. D.J. was a stand-out two-sport athlete
in high school, playing at linebacker for his high school football team
and wrestling in high school as well all four years. D.J. was recruited
by several schools to play college football and wound up accepting an
opportunity to play linebacker at the University of South Carolina. In
D.J.'s four years with the Gamecocks, he was a starter at linebacker for
his last two years and his senior year, made the 2nd Team All-SEC and
earned his degree in Media Communications with a 3.2 GPA. While he was
at the NFL combine, preparing to possibly be drafted into the NFL, he
suffered a torn meniscus in his knee, thus leaving him undrafted on draft
day. After signing a free-agent deal with the Saint Louis Rams and being
cut in the pre-season, D.J. headed back home to Moline to work at the
local WB affiliate, using his connections to land his father's Quad Cities
Wrestling promotion a TV time slot on Saturday nights at 7:00 PM.
D.J. also started training in the ring to be a wrestler and after six
months of grueling training and paying dues by setting up and tearing
down wrestling rings, operating the sound system for the shows, working
the concession stands, and training at his father's wrestling school,
D.J. made his debut, forming a tag team with older brother Douglas. The
brothers were starting to generate a lot of buzz around the Mid-West with
people saying they could be the next big tag team. Ed Raymond saw them
wrestle one day at a spot show in Davenport, Iowa and approached the brothers
about signing a deal to join True Talent Wrestling with him.
Sadly, tragedy struck two weeks before Douglas' televised debut was scheduled
when he was in a car accident, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.
Stricken with grief, D.J., who had been appearing as Jesse Cassidy on
TTW television, changed his name in honor of his brother to D.J. Cassidy.
For the next few months, D.J. worked on the lower-mid-card spectrum, putting
over talent in the process while developing a reputation as a talented
worker.
After a few months of singles competition, D.J. was paired up with Herbert
J. Moxley to become the Revenge of the Nerds, one of the most beloved
tag teams in TTW history. The duo fought improbable odds and defeated
the legendary Beautiful People of Jonny Johnson and Christopher Davis,
mere weeks before TTW shut down.
The duo picked up where they left off in LEGACY, feuding with the Old
School Kings and being two-time tag team champions, the first team in
LEGACY to achieve that feat. The Nerds were slowly starting to receive
singles pushes when Herbert J. Moxley was seriously injured in the ring
and shortly after-wards, in a match against Dan Stein at "Brick By
Brick", D.J. suffered a severe concussion that left him unable to
wrestle in any capacity for two and a half years.
Now, inspired by the comeback attempt of Herbert J. Moxley, D.J. Cassidy
has come back to LEGACY to rebuild his career and prove to the fans that
this third-generation grappler is truly one of the best all-around wrestlers
in the world.
